Annadana
Providing food or annadana is considered the most noble service one can undertake. It is higher than any other dana or service.
Food is the fundamental provider of energy for all living beings. So providing food for the hungry is considered to be magnanimous and it is so endorsed by the Vedic Conscience.
In the Taitthiriya Upanishad it states that Annadana is the noblest of all services / donations of man.
Do not imprecate the food, that shall be your vow. Prana is food. Body is the eater of food. The body is fixed in Prana. The Prana is fixed in the body. Thus, food is fixed in food. He who knows that food is fixed in food, becomes one with Brahman. He becomes possessed of food and he becomes the eater of food. He becomes great in progeny, in cattle wealth and in the splendour of Brahmavarchas. His fame grows to sky heights.
There are many verses on the sanctity of annadana in our scriptures. The Annapoorna stotra is:
अन्नपूर्णॆसदाऽपूर्णॆ शङ्करप्राणवल्लभॆ ।
ज्ञानवैराग्यसिद्ध्यर्थं भिक्षान्दॆहिचपार्वति ।।
“O Annapoorna, the provider of nourishment and fulfillment, consort of Lord Shankara (Shiva), grant me alms, and bless me with wisdom and Worldly detachment!”
Annadana in the kshetra is a fundamental activity undertaken, as a humble service to the Lord. All those who visit the Kshetra, as pilgrims / devotees / tourists / needy and hungry, are provided with food throughout the day in the form of breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Shree Annapoorneshwari Bhojanashala at the Kshetra is the venue for availing the annadana, on behalf of the devotees who offer their services to the Lord.
Donations for annadana are solicited and honoured here. Devotees can offer this service here on daily / weekly / monthly basis or according to their capacity. Food grains and other cooking materials are also accepted here as annadana service. Acknowledgement of the service is given in the form of a receipt, at the Kshetra office.
